Mike McCarthy on Trevon Diggs’ incident with a reporter: He should “stay on the highway”

Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs’ confrontation with a television reporter after Sunday’s 30-24 loss to the 49ers was born of frustration, coach Mike McCarthy said Monday.

However, McCarthy did not excuse Diggs for his angry exchange with WFAA’s Mike Leslie over the reporter’s in-game social media post.

“I think we have to be better in those moments. I’m always talking about it stay on a high road,” McCarthy said, via Todd Archer of ESPN. “That is part of our responsibility in this industry. But I’m not ignorant or naive about the fact that this generation is part of the world they live in, the world of social media. You have to manage that. That’s part of being a professional athlete and representing this organization well.”

Leslie responded to a post that showed Diggs’ tracking 49ers tight end George Kittle, ultimately pushing him out of bounds after a long gain. The reporter seemed to question Diggs’ efforts, writing, “What is Trevon Diggs doing in this piece?”

“Is that what you took from that?” Diggs asked Leslie as reporters stood outside the locker room waiting for it to open. ‘Did you take that from that whole piece? You don’t know football. You can’t do anything I do. You can’t go out there and do nothing. Stay in your lane, buddy. Stop trying, dog.”

Diggs skipped his media obligation in the locker room.

“It’s obviously important that we all handle it professionally, and it’s not the type of thing we want to do,” defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer said. “You probably shouldn’t read tweets right after the game, but I don’t know if that was it, so… . . .”
